Thank You for Smoking
Directed by Jason Reitman.
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, Cameron Bright, Adam Brody, Katie Holmes, William H Macy.
Thank You for Smoking is a satirical comedy revolving around Nick Naylor, the smooth, slick spokesman who defends the image of cigarettes on behalf of ’Big Tobacco’, whilst simultaneously trying to be a good role model to his young son Joey.
This film has a lot of very accomplished actors whom contribute to a very humorous film that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It jumps straight into the humor and takes you on a great ride. Aaron Eckhart (Nick Naylor) holds the film well portraying a highly likeable character, trying (and very capable) of doing the right thing, yet unfortunately has his career and success built upon defending (what many view as) the wrong thing. Regardless of your views on smoking you’ll still have your moments feeling sorry for his character. In fact your views on smoking aren’t at all relevant to this film as it’s not really about smoking itself, nor is it preachy. The script is well-written allowing actors like William H Macy, Cameron Bright, and Adam Brody to remind/show us how funny they are capable of being. Admittedly although this film is a brilliant satire and well worth the time seeing, I did expect it to be a bit funnier than it was. However, it’s still memorable and I can’t wait to absorb it into my collection once it’s released on DVD.
Smokers and non-smokers alike, rejoice and see this film!
