The Motorcycle Diaries
Directed by Walter Salles.
"Before he changed the world, the world changed him"
Based on the journals of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and his close friend Alberto Granado, The Motorcycle Diaries is consistently entertaining and far more than just a road movie. I was inspired!
Heading out from Buenos Aires on their rather unreliable motorbike in January of 1952, med students Ernesto and Alberto’s hopes and unchanneled passion is exciting. As we ride with them over 12,000km and five months, we witness a change.
At only 24 years old, these experiences were the inspiration of Guevara’s revolution in South America… Granado later became a leader in medicine.
The simplistic political nature of the film was in its favour in my opinion, enticing, possibly even inviting me to go and learn as much as I can about Che Guevara and his revolution — as opposed to being put off by too much information as my non-political mind would have been. Despite the lack of political information conveyed, the timeline and happenings are apparently authentic and accurate. I found both actors Gael Garcia Bernal (Guevara) and Rodrigo De La Serna (Granado) to be convincing in their portrayals, the photography altogether consistent in quality and beauty as is the musical score — all creative elements a success in my book.
"So much injustice" — Almost hearing the revolution in Guevara’s mind, this film served to highlight my lack of awareness and knowledge about such a prominent figure of history.
You too can be inspired. An honest 8.5/10
