The Lawless Heart
I don’t know about you, but I love a challenge when I go to the movies. I love films which aren’t linear or straight forward. Most people seemed to enjoy Pulp Fiction because it juggled things around just a fraction. Well, so does The Lawless Heart and in my opinion it does it very well. Here three stories unfold simultaneously but are presented serially.
Enter Dan, unfulfilled farmer and family man flirting with the town’s florist. Enter Nick, grieving gay man who has lost his long term partner in a boating accident. Enter Tim, adventurer finally returning to the village to fall in love.
The intricate story, as being told from each of these men’s perspective, develops into a little gem of a film with wonderful performances, heartfelt moments and even a few laughs to brighten things up. It’s about making the best of the life you’re living, about acceptance and generosity towards those around you. But most of all it’s about the vulnerability of men. It is something we all know about but don’t get to see very often on the big screen. Sideways has been hailed for showing it but The Lawless Heart does it in a more honest and subtle way.
This is British cinema at its best. Don’t miss it.
