Breakfast on Pluto

In this incredibly weird film Irish Actor Cillian Murphy plays ‘Kitten’ a transsexual drifter on a really weird journey through life to find the phantom lady (his mother). We see this film in a multitude of progressive chapters highlighting the key points of Kitten’s life, starting from Kitten’s mischievous childhood, to him leaving home and his attempts to brave the harshness of the world, while sugar coating it in his own fantasy terms.
After seeing Kinky Boots, and now Breakfast on Pluto, I’ve come to a revelation. If you’re an upcoming actor looking to carve your acting skills into the eyes of audiences, then simply play an eccentric transsexual with pseudo-erotic mannerisms. After that you will never be typecast again.
Cillian Murphy is exceptional in his role, and you can’t help but laugh at the nature of this film and the bizarre fantasy twists within this film. The film is based upon McCabe’s novel with the same name. The soundtrack for this film perfectly complements the fantasy journey that ‘Kitten’ makes for himself.
The use of chapters seems good at first since they are brief and allow you to leap through the growth in Kitten’s life. But after a time their titles become quite abstract changing from “the day I did this” to “perfume” and other such random things. Combined with the fact that there are about 33 of these chapters (it is a 2 hour film), you eventually start to feel like you don’t quite know where things are going. It’s not that the film contains irrelevant scenes it just seems quite long.
If you’re looking for a unique film, that is funny and weird, then give this film a go. It is quite enchanting!
