Behind the Sun

Directed by Walter Salles
Portuguese with English subtitles

The atmosphere is thick, the mood sombre and the story is grim and distressing. Based on Albanian writer, Ismail Kadaré’s novel, “Broken April”, Behind the Sun is a tale about the futility of revenge and the power of brotherly love. Set in the Brazilian Badlands in 1910, the film follows the story of two families who are in the midst of a feud over land. The central character, Pacu (Ravi Ramos Lacerda) is the youngest son of the Breves family. His oldest brother has been killed in the feud and following the father’s iron rule of “death before dishonour”, Pacu’s remaining brother, Tonho (Rodrigo Santoro) is sent to avenge the death. On completion of this he is marked with a black arm band, signifying he is next to be killed. In the knowledge that he has but one month to live, Tonho begins a search for love and adventure. His desires begin to be realised when he meets the entrancing Clara, a circus performer travelling with her partner, Selustiano. Happiness seems almost within grasp, but the brothers know that time is running short. The story heads towards a startling conclusion that is bound to have long lasting effects on the audience.

Walter Carvalho’s innovative, stylish cinematography is striking, conveying the necessary dark and ominous mood for the film. Director, Walter Salles (director of Central Station) successfully constructs a bleak and powerful tale, executed well by a skilfully chosen cast. Ravi Ramos Lacerda, in particular gives a brilliant performance as Pacu and makes an immediate connection with the audience during his narration in the eerie opening scenes. Behind the Sun is a stunning film, but if you are the emotional type — bring tissues.
