Austin Powers II:
The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Before I saw this film, I attempted several times to get the first
film from the video store.
Apparently
the rest of Adelaide had the same idea too, and I couldn’t get it.
For any of you that may be in a similar situation, fear not, there
are no subtle nuances you will miss out on in the second film if
you haven’t seen the first. In fact there is nothing subtle about
The Spy Who Shagged Me and that is what makes it so much
fun.
With character names like Felicity Shagwell, Ivana Humpalot (said with a Russian accent), Robin Spits (nee Swallows) and Dr Evil, this film spoofs everything from James Bond, Batman, and Star Wars to musicals and the 60s. You really have to go into this film with an open mind and not be bothered by the odd bit of toilet humour that crops up. The sets are bright and colourful and the characters are stereotypical.
For those of you who did see the first film, the problem of Liz
Hurley still being around is resolved at the beginning of the film
leaving the way clear for the fabulous
Felicity
Shagwell (Heather Graham) to become Austin’s main squeeze. I am
also told by people who have seen the first film, that the second
one is better. Mike Myers displays his versatility, for want of
a better word, by playing Austin Powers, Dr Evil, Fat Bastard, and
Austin again. Now that I think about it, I don’t think there was
a scene in the movie without him.
I highly recommend seeing The Spy Who Shagged Me. It is mindless entertainment and a lot of fun. As much as I enjoy being challenged and affected by films, sometimes it is nice to not have to think.
