Alfie

Lovable Alfie

The identical smile aside, it is difficult to decide whether Alfie and Amelie are twins or each others’ nemeses. A nicely rounded cast of well developed characters complements a plot that is more sophisticated than the usual artificial sweetener pouring out of the States. At least it seems so. Granted this may include Jude Law and his tactfully, charmingly employed grin, but the plot is unapologetic, for that matter so is Alfie.

It is worth making note of Alfie’s main occupations in the place he makes his own, New York. Humble, yet mischievous he enjoys doing ‘favours’ always off to the next job in the choicest of threads and transport.

The jazz-laden opening sequence lets us know just what we’re in for (we expect more of the same) but surprisingly that is not all there is. Artful and interestingly complex shots let us into his carefully spun web of rationalizations for the life that is his, carefully constructed, and rationalized, though less than considered. Alfie’s inhabitable world may be magic, but this unchecked lifestyle soon induces his own personal tragedy. Yep, all his. Dear snappy Alfred has definitely been left out in the snowy chill this time. We are let to feel sympathy for this man whose moment of charm has somewhat deservedly expired, because already we have been drawn into the inner of the beast.

This movie is intriguing, and satisfying, with a lot less of the Hollywood imprinted upon it. This is definitely watchable for guys (even if only for a handy aftershave tip) and gals (at least for the charming Law and pretty shots) alike. Yet who knows, maybe I have just been entranced by the despicable Alfie, perhaps I’d better watch the original… apparently he’s far more loathable there. What do you say?

And, maybe we could consider showing the 70s version in the AU theatre sometime. Something to think about.
