About AUFS

The Adelaide University Film Society was founded in 1996 by Kirsten Kennington and Esther Speight. For a low, low cost we provide our members with free films on a weekly basis and a forum for discussing all things film-related (and perhaps, not-film-related).

All about the Film Society

The Adelaide University Film Society is dedicated to increasing enjoyment, knowledge and viewing of films.

We show films. Every teaching week. All year.
They're free for members. (This could be you.)
They're chosen by members. (This could be you.)
Cinemas invite us to review films pre-release. (This could be you.)

Films are usually followed by impromptu social happenings to which all members are invited. There is also an email discussion list to which any member can contribute their opinions, thoughts, last dying words etc.

Besides our main weekly screenings, we hold occasional video days and numerous other social events throughout the year, including very cheap (yet orgiastic) weekends away at the beach or in the hills…

Some of the films we've screened: Spirited Away, Microcosmos, Yojimbo, Pushpak, The Conversation, M, To Kill a Mockingbird, Gabbeh, Lolita (Kubrick), Bad Boy Bubby, Eraserhead (Lynch), Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, Debbie Does Dallas, old TV series episodes, schlock horror, German films, French films, Japanese films, arthouse films, classic films, foreign films, cult films, bizarre films cos we can, & more…

Each term's films are selected at a social event — all members are welcome to come and spruik for that favourite or famously obscure film!

So if you want to…
See great films every week of term all year for FREE…
See that film that never gets shown…
Learn how to project (become a sprocket meister*)…
See FREE previews and write reviews…
Meet cool, interesting people…
Be part of one of AU's largest and most active clubs…
And generally be in the know of what's happening in the big wide world of film…

… Join the Film Society at our table during O'Week or at any of our weekly films, screened in the Union Cinema (Level 5, Union Building). See the map for the location of the Union Building within the university.

Activities

What do we do as members of the film society? Well there’s a whole bunch of film-related activities available.

Viewing Films

Outside the Cinema The AUFS shows films weekly. Every Thursday night during university term time at 7 p.m. we gather at the Union Cinema, Level 5, Union Building to view the week’s carefully selected contribution to the cinematic arts. The films are free for members. If you are not a member, you can join at the door.

Everyone who attends is eligible for the door prize (usually a double pass to the Palace/Nova cinemas), which is drawn at the conclusion of the film. Then join us for lively discussion afterwards at a café in the city.

Check the programme to see what’s on this term.

Selecting Films

Discussion over dinner

All the films that we show are hand-picked by AUFS members. Every few months we get together at a random place and with the aid of the chemical stimulants of our choosing, we select films to show over the course of the next term. We try to ensure an even spread over various categories — mainstream, foreign language, art-house, or just stuff that scared us as children.

We give plenty of notice for our film choosing nights, so if you hate our selections, come along and influence them for the better. Contact us or check out the home page to find out when the next film choosing night is being held.

Projecting Films

Projecting Most of the films we show are projected by club members (and, sometimes, it shows!) using the Union’s two trusty, or not-so-trusty 16 mm projectors. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to project a film using a 16 mm projector, and how to battle with those cinemascope lenses, then we can teach you. Courses are held regularly over the academic year. So contact us to find out when the next one is being held.

Reviewing Films

Palace/Nova Want to see new-release mainstream films for free at cinemas in the city? Well you can. As an AUFS member, you entitled to attend pre-release media screenings of upcoming features, put on by our good friends at Palace/Nova Cinemas. Contact us to find out what releases are forthcoming, and how you can get the ticket. Of course, you do have to write a review of the film for our newsletter, Reelbuzz. After all, that’s why the cinemas have the media screenings in the first place!

Discussing Films

We can discuss films anywhere: after a showing, following a media screening, during film choosing session, or just on the bus. But if you want to do it on-line, we maintain a discussion list where you can dicuss your favourite or not-so-favourite films with an audience that will always appreciate your point of view (!!). To find out more about the discussion list, click here.

Newsletter

Reelbuzz The AUFS publishes a monthly newsletter, ReelBuzz, which contains current events, information about the club, the latest reviews, witty stuff from the editor, and much more. ReelBuzz is free, so pick one up at the next Thursday film showing.

If you would like to help with the publication of ReelBuzz, then contact the editor(s) and they will be happy to talk to you.

Special Events

Weekend Away As well as all these other activities, the club organises special events, such as getaway weekends at south coast beach houses or up in the hills, where you can commune with nature, take pleasant walks along the beach or through the hills, enjoy each other’s company, cook strange food, and watch a lot of videos.

You never know when the next event will occur, so keep watching the home page for details.
